Build a sawmill layout that does not fight you

Clearance, ownership, output space—and fewer stuck logs.

Design the flow before decorating

Give the incoming load, mill opening and processed output their own clear space. A compact arrangement that blocks the unloading area can become slower than a plain, open layout. Start with a simple path you understand, then add conveyors or supporting structures only where they remove an observed bottleneck. The video on this page offers visual layout ideas rather than a universal blueprint.

Size the wood for your equipment

A long or thick trunk that will not fit is a processing problem, not proof that the wood is broken. Check the mill you own, section oversize logs and leave room to rotate pieces without knocking other stock off the plot. Fir and Pine have the same reference sale rate, but their different tree shapes can affect handling and clearance.

Separate stock by purpose

Keep sale planks, building pieces and unprocessed logs apart. That makes accidental selling less likely and helps you measure a farming run honestly. A bright rare-looking material is not automatically valuable at the dropoff; look up the exact species before clearing a pile you meant to use in a build.

Protect the output area

Place the useful output on your own land and avoid a layout that regularly spills pieces into a road or a neighbor’s plot. The wood reference distinguishes processed planks from raw logs for persistence. Even a technically fast mill is a poor setup if the output becomes hard to control or cannot be saved as intended.

Test in small batches

Run a short, mixed-size batch through the layout before committing your whole expedition load. Watch the feed, output and unloading points. Change one problem at a time and measure the result. This guide does not promise automatic farms, duplication or scripts; the goal is a dependable manual workflow.

Common questions

Why are my logs not going through?

Check ownership, the mill opening, log size and any obstruction around the feed or output. Cut oversized sections down and test one piece at a time.

Does every wood get the same sawmill multiplier?

No. The listed raw and plank rates differ by species. The calculator uses the two values separately rather than applying a universal multiplier.
